Math Meets Nature: Traveling Miss T. Teams Up with Gathering Place Tulsa
Natalie TeboulWhat happens when you combine the beauty of nature, the wonder of play, and the power of math? You get an unforgettable learning experience... Some may even call it an adventure! And that’s exactly what’s happening at Gathering Place in Tulsa, Oklahoma this spring.
Traveling Miss T. is thrilled to collaborate with the incredible team at Gathering Place to bring a custom Gathering Place Math Map to life in celebration of their Math in Nature exhibit!
From April 1 through June 30, visitors can explore the Math in Nature exhibit, located in the heart of Adventure Playground, right among the iconic upside-down tree structures. This immersive outdoor experience invites learners of all ages to discover how math exists all around us, highlighting concepts like:
🌱 The Fibonacci sequence found in plants and patterns
🍯 Tessellations that repeat and tile across surfaces like honeycombs
🦋 Symmetry in leaves, flowers, and living forms like butterflies!
But the learning doesn’t start or stop at the exhibit. In fact, in order to find it, visitors need to know where exactly the Adventure Playground is... 🗺️ And that's where Traveling Miss T. comes in! Math Maps are a proven way to blend math & cartography into an interactive park adventure. These maps guide visitors through Gathering Place while teaching them how to:
- Plot and find points on a coordinate plane
- Navigate real-world spaces using math
- Connect spatial thinking with exploration
Math isn’t just something that happens in a classroom, it’s everywhere. As a math educator, I couldn't be more excited to see Gathering Place bring math into a vibrant outdoor setting. This collaboration helps learners see math differently: as something dynamic, creative, and deeply connected to the world around them.
