How The Spirit of New York City Inspired This Month’s Math Map

Natalie Teboul

There’s something about New York City that never really leaves you.

As a proud born and raised New Yorker, and the creator of Traveling Miss T., I’ve built a brand around exploring the world through math. This past week, my journey brought me back to where it all began: New York. No matter how much I’ve fallen in love with the West Coast, there’s an energy in New York City that simply cannot be replicated.

I was lucky enough to feel the action last week on my annual summer trip to visit family and friends. While the city was a hot 93 degrees, humid and smelly (the parts I definitely do not miss) it was also busy and alive in the way that only makes sense to true New Yorkers.

While I now call California home, and truly love the beauty and lifestyle of the West Coast, nothing compares to the energy that filled New York last week surrounding the NBA finals. But it's not just about basketball. It's about community, history, and a shared moment that connected millions of people.

In honor of the New York Knicks winning their first NBA championship in 53 years, this month's Map of the Month is Manhattan. (Sorry it's late... Like I said, I was in New York last week!)

This trip reminded me why I started Traveling Miss T. in the first place. To create meaningful, place-based learning experiences that connect students to real places and real stories.

This month's coordinate plane adventure invites students to graph their way through Manhattan, revealing iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, the World Trade Center, the Apollo Theater, and Central Park. But more than that, it tells a story about a city. Its culture, its geography, and the energy that makes it unforgettable.

The resource also includes a geographic overview of all five boroughs, helping students understand how Manhattan fits into the larger landscape of New York City. It’s math, geography, and storytelling all in one. Because learning math isn’t just about numbers on a page. It’s about connection.

New York will always be a part of me. And through this Math Map, I hope students can experience just a small piece of its magic.
